About the venue
Swimming Centre
The Sports Centre has five large swimming pools: the competition pool, the training pool, the synchronized swimming and water polo pool, the diving pool, and the underwater diving pool. This 15-metre-deep pool is the only indoor underwater diving pool of its kind in North America.
The Sports Centre also has two secondary pools: the warm-up pool and the wading pool, which is equipped with a water fountain and slides for young children.
All the pools and sports areas are under the constant supervision of certified lifeguards and monitors who have been accredited by well-known organizations.
Seventeen high-capacity sand filters are in continuous operation at the Sports Centre. The 9 million-odd litres of water in our pools are rejuvenated at least four times daily. An automated system analyzes without interruption the quality of the water of each pool. Automatic systems pump in the necessary chlorine and CO2. In addition to automated controls, our staff manually collects water samples.
The permanent stands have 2,777 seats for watching swimming and diving competitions. From inside the Sports Centre, one is struck by the size of the roof covering the seven pools.
Physical conditioning areas
The fitness room covers 581 square metres is equipped with free weights, selective weight machines such as Atlantis, and cardiovascular exercise equipment, including treadmills, rowing machines, steppers, electronic bicycles, V-bikes, and elliptical machines. Trainers are available at all times to design weight-training programs or conduct fitness tests.
A multisport room also has badminton courts for shooting practice.
CESAQ: A Centre of excellence for aquatic sports in Québec
The Sports Centre is home to the Québec Aquatic Training Centre (CESAQ), an assistance program for high performance athletes, established by the National Multisport Centre-Montréal (NMC-M). This is where the national synchronized swim team and the women’s national water polo team train, as do Canada’s national swim and diving teams. The CNPPO swim club, which includes several elite-level athletes, is also based at the Olympic Park’s Sports Centre.
In 2006, following the creation of CESAQ, the Sports Centre installed a new pool dedicated to synchronized swimming and water polo. It is the only facility of its kind in Canada that meets international standards. A strength training room has been built for athletes in the two disciplines.
In addition, the diving facilities have been upgraded to meet international standards, in particular to accommodate synchronized diving. A dryland training area for acrobatics has also been set up nearby. With these additions to existing equipment, the Sports Centre now houses some of the most comprehensive and modern aquatic facilities in Canada.
