SYNCHRO CANADA ANNOUNCES NATIONAL JUNIOR TEAM HEAD COACH
September 30, 2009 (OTTAWA, ON): Synchro Canada is proud to announce the appointment of Meng Chen to position of Canadian National Junior Team Head Coach. This December (2009) and March (2010) Chen will lead the Junior Team Preparation Camps for talent identified athletes throughout Canada. These camps will lead into the Junior Team’s selection in May (2010) and their training in preparation for the team’s appearance at the 2010 Junior World Championships. She will be involved in the selection of the team’s assistant coaches as well, and will report to National Head Coach, Denise Sauve.
“We are very proud to have Meng lead our team to the 2010 Junior World Championships,” says Catherine Gosselin-Despres, Synchro Canada’s Chief Operating Officer. “In the past year she’s spent at the Centre of Excellence with us, she has shown real talent and leadership.”
Chen brings extensive international experience as a coach and athlete to the role, including five years as a National Team coach in Malaysia, and one competitive season as assistant coach to Canada’s National AA Team – the team that produced two bronze medal finishes at the 2009 World Championships (solo and combo). Since 2004, she has coached at every World Championship and Junior World Championship for synchro. In 2008, the Beijing-native led the national duet from Malaysia to a very successful international season.
Prior to Chen’s coaching career, she had a very successful athletic career that included several years as a member of China’s Junior and Senior National Teams, as well as several international medals.
