Golden performances for Canadians Emilia Kopcik and Gabrielle Cardinal at Swiss Open synchro meet

kopcik_emilia.jpgLUGANO, Switzerland – Emilia Kopcik of Surrey, B.C., earned three gold medals including a victory with Gabrielle Cardinal of St-Lambert, Que., in duet on Sunday at the Swiss Open synchronized swimming competition.

In duet, Kopcik and Cardinal dominated the competition and totalled 78.202 points.  Sascia Kraus and Fabienne Schmid of Switzerland were second at 70.804 and Sabina Langerova and Marketa Kincova of the Czech Republic third at 70.222.

It was another decisive victory for Kopcik in the solo event as she tabulated 77.560 points.  Kraus was second at 69.322 and her compatriot Aisha El Mehrek third at 68.827.

The figures routine opened the competition and also accounted for 50 percent of the final mark in both solo and duet.  The Canadians were 1-2 with Kopcik first at 73.619, Cardinal second at 70.188 and Eve Tieche of Switzerland third at 67.498.

“We are extremely pleased with our performances this weekend,” said Kopcik.  “They are very promising results leading up to the Canadian championships where we hope to qualify for the 2010 FINA World Junior Championships.''
