CHANIA, Greece – Jacqueline Simoneau of Montreal continued to perform like an established veteran on Friday as she took second spot after the solo preliminaries at the Comen Cup synchronized swimming competition.Canada is being represented at the competition by its 2010 13-15 national team. The thirteen-year-old Simoneau, the youngest member on the Canadian squad, is competing in all three events this week. In Thursday’s prelims she combined forces with Anne-Marie Chouinard of Montreal for second spot in duet and helped Canada to third in the team event. In Friday’s solo prelims, Kristina Makushenko of Russia leads with 86.450 points. Simoneau follows at 84.450 and Evangelia Koutibi of Greece is third at 84.050. Simoneau interpreted an Asian flavoured routine that she has been working on for a year “I really want to hold on to second place in the final,” said Simoneau, who started synchronized swimming at age eight and plays several sports including hockey. “I don’t think I was at my best today but it was good enough. My presentation was the best part of my program. There are a lot of technical challenges in the program and I really want to clean up those little errors I made.” Simoneau and Chouinard compete in the duet final Saturday. The solo and team finals are on Sunday.
