SAVONA, Italy – Canada’s national senior development team posted the best score in the team technical routine on Thursday to open the Savona Open synchronized swimming competition in Italy. The Canadians, with two members from the 2009 world championship team, earned 90.875 points with Italy a close second at 90.625 and Brazil third at 85.750. Italy fielded seven world team members from 2009 and Brazil five. Swimming for Canada were Camille Bowness (Beaconsfield, QC), Gabrielle Cardinal (Saint-Lambert, QC), Sandy Gill (Coquitlam, B.C.), Emilia Kopcik (Surrey, B.C.), Rebecca Maule (Guelph, ON), Marie-Lou Morin (Montreal, QC), Marie Rondeau (Quebec City, QC), and Erin Willson (Toronto, ON). ‘’It was a very good start considering it was the first competition in six months for most of us,’’ said Gill. ‘’But we know we have a lot more in us and we want to push even harder in the final. This was a routine that was familiar to some of us and the newcomers on the team did a really good job learning it so quickly.’’ Competition continues through to Sunday.
