Canada fourth in team technical final at FINA World Aquatic Championships
team_tech_2.jpgSHANGHAI – Canada took fourth spot on Tuesday in the team technical final in synchronized swimming at the FINA World Aquatic Championships.  It was a third consecutive fourth place finish for Canada in synchro swimming this week.

Russia won the gold medal with 98.300 points, China was second at 96.800 and Spain third at 96.000.  The Canadians followed at 94.400 with Marie-Pierre Boudreau-Gagnon of Riviere-du-Loup, Que., Jo-Annie Fortin of Montreal, Chloe Isaac of Brossard, Que., Stephanie Leclair and Karine Thomas, both of Gatineau, Que., Tracy Little of Pointe-Claire, Que., Élise Marcotte of l’Ancienne-Lorette, Que., and Valérie Welsh of St-Nicholas, Que.

‘’We achieved our goal of swimming better than in the preliminaries,’’ said Marcotte.  ‘’It was a solid swim for us.  Our main focus towards the 2012 Olympics is to deliver consistent performances every time out and show the judges that our elements are solid and that we are a proud team.’’

Boudreau-Gagnon and Marcotte stand fourth after the duet free prelims and Canada is fourth after the team combination prelims.

In the duet free prelims, Natalia Ischenko and Svetlana Romashina of Russia are first at 98.490, Tingting Jiang and Wenwen Jiang of China second at 96.770 and Ona Carbonell and Andrea Fuentes of Spain third at 96.020.  Boudreau-Gagnon and Marcotte, performing to music from Metallica, are fourth at 94.100.

‘’We know we can do better final,’’ said Marcotte.  ‘’There are some adjustments we need to make in the synchronization.  It was a good performance considering we haven’t been together that long.  We are excited about the final.’’

In the team combo prelims, the Russians are ahead at 97.970, China follows at 96.320 and Spain is third at 95.640.  Canada totals 95.250 with Boudreau-Gagnon, Fortin, Isaac, Leclair, Little, Marcotte, Thomas, Welsh, Geneviève Bélanger of Laval, Que., and Stéphanie Durocher of Repentigny, Que.  Canada introduced a new routine performed to the music of Queen.

‘’We are very enthused about this performance,’’ said Welsh.  ‘’The crowd loved it and we’re looking forward to performing it again in the final.’’

Competition continues Wednesday with the prelims and final for the solo free event and the prelims in the team free event.  The team combo final is Thursday and the duet free final Friday.
