Boudreau-Gagnon and Marcotte fourth in duet at FINA World Aquatic Championships
SHANGHAI – Marie-Pier Boudreau-Gagnon of Riviere-du-Loup, Que., and Elise Marcotte of l’Ancienne-Lorette, Que., placed fourth in the free duet event in Friday’s synchronized swimming competition at the FINA World Aquatic Championships.

Natalia Ischenko and Svetlana Romashina of Russia took the gold at 98.410 points, Tingting Jiang and Wenwen Jiang of China were second at 96.810 and Ona Carbonell and Andrea Fuentes of Spain third at 96.500.  It was a fifth gold for Ischenko.

Boudreau-Gagnon and Marcotte, performing to music from Metallica, followed at 94.950.  Canada has a bronze and five fourth place finishes so far in synchronized swimming at the world championships.

‘’Our challenge was to do better than in preliminaries and we succeeded,’’ said Boudreau-Gagnon.  ‘’We were technically strong and made no errors in synchronization. Elise and I have never been this fit and we showed our full potential today.  It was a big step towards the London Olympics.’’

Marcotte agreed that Canada made a big impression today.

‘’We wanted to show the world we are a strong pair,’’ said Marcotte.  ‘’We’ve closed the gap on the competition.  The Russians are doing a lot of amazing things and we have a lot to learn from them.  But there also some things we can do better now.’’

Competition ends Saturday with the team free competition.  Canada is fourth after Wednesday’s preliminaries.
