SHANGHAI- Canada came within a half point of a podium appearance in the team free competition in synchronized swimming action on Saturday at the FINA World Aquatic Championships and took fourth spot. Russia completed a golden sweep of all seven synchro events this week earning 98.620 points. China was second at 96.580 and Spain third at 96.150. It was also a sixth gold medal for Russia’s Natalia Ishchenko. Canada totalled 95.490 with Stephanie Durocher of Repentigny, Que., Jo-Annie Fortin of Montreal, Chloe Isaac of Brossard, Que., Stephanie Leclair and Karine Thomas, both of Gatineau, Que., Tracy Little of Pointe-Claire, Que., Elise Marcotte of l’Ancienne-Lorette, Que., and Valerie Welsh of St-Nicholas, Que. ‘’It was a nice performance,’’ said Marcotte. ‘’We are really excited about the upcoming Pan Am Games (in October) and the 2012 Olympic season. We were solid and showed Canada will be among the best teams next year.’’ Welsh said there are some areas Canada needs to improve while it is showing its strength in others. ‘’Definitely we made a big statement with our acrobatic maneuvers and choreography this week,’’ said Welsh. ‘’The areas we want to be better is showing more solidity throughout the program and also gaining more height on our lifts. Still this is a good way to end the competition. We are super proud.’’ Canada ended the synchro competition at the worlds with one bronze medal earned in the team combination event.
