Canadians in a three-way battle for team silver at Comen Cup
BUSTO ARSIZIO, Italy – Canada stands second in the team event after Friday’s preliminaries but is feeling the heat from Italy and Greece for that runner-up position at the Comen Cup synchronized swimming competition.

Canada has fielded its 13-15 national team and this is the biggest international competition of the year for this age group.

Russia holds a solid lead in first spot with 87.090 points, the Canadians follow at 83.030, Italy is third at 82.510 and Greece fourth at 82.340.

Swimming for Canada were Jacqueline Simoneau, Anne-Marie Chouinard and Myriam Sabourin of Montreal Synchro; Katherine Rhéaume of Dollard Synchro in Montreal;  Caroline Marshall and Clare McGovern of Granite Synchro in Toronto; and Kali Wong and Erica Slavin of the Calgary Aquabelles.

‘’We had a solid week of training particularly the last couple of days,’’ said Marshall.  ‘’We showed a lot of energy in our performance.  We know it’s close for second place but we want to stay focused on our performance.’’

The Canadians performed a routine about gladiators.

‘’It’s a very intricate story with intense battles,’’ said Marshall.  ‘’We have two spin elements and risky movements.  In the final we would like to achieve more height on our lifts.’’

Competition continues Saturday with the duet and team finals.  Simoneau and Chouinard are second in duet after Thursday’s preliminaries.

At the 2010 Comen Cup in Greece, Canada won two medals.  Simoneau won gold in solo and silver in duet with Chouinard. Canada was fourth in the team event.
