| Canadian duet in harmony after strong preliminary round at Pan Am Games |

Marie-Pier Boudreau-Gagnon of Riviere-du-Loup, Que., and Élise Marcotte of l’Ancienne-Lorette, Que., are in first place after Tuesday’s preliminaries in duet as the synchronized swimming competition got underway at the 2011 Pan American Games. Boudreau-Gagnon and Marcotte totalled 94.000 points with Mary Killman and Mariya Koroleva of the U.S., second at 90.125 and Lara Teixeira and Nayara Figueira of Brazil third at 88.500. The winning pair will earn a country quota spot in duet for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. ‘’We are very satisfied,’’ said Boudreau-Gagnon, 28, fourth with her partner at the FINA World Aquatic Championships this past July in Rome. ‘’There has been a major progression in our routines since the world championships.’’ Marcotte was also pleased with their start to the Games. ‘’This is a great way to get the competition underway,’’ she said. ‘’We really wanted to show our strong technical skills in particular because that will be an important element at the Olympic Games.’’ Their coach Julie Sauvé also gave two thumbs up to the routine swam to the soundtrack of Slumdog Millionaire. ‘’This is the last event at which they will execute this routine and they have never done it better,’’ said Sauvé. Competition continues Wednesday with the team preliminaries. The duet final is Thursday and the team final Friday.
