BEIJING – Canada took the third position in the team free routine on Saturday at the FINA World Trophy synchronized swimming competition in Beijing, China.Spain earned the first spot totalling 97.151 points, China followed in second at 94.525 and the Canadians collected their podium standing of the competition after two fourth place finishes Friday, scoring 93. 613. Swimming for Canada were Camille Bowness of Beaconsfield, Que., Annabelle Frappier of Mont-Saint-Hilaire, Que., Sandy Gill of Coquitlam, B.C., Emilia Kopcik of Surrey, B.C., Rebecca Maule of Guelph, Ontario, Lisa Mikelberg of Hamstead, Que., Marie-Lou Morin of Westmount, Que., and Marie Rondeau of Quebec City. The Canadians swam their popular western themed routine which this group has been working on for the past couple of months. At this competition, Team Canada, mostly including athletes from Synchro Canada’s 2011-2012 Senior National B team athletes, is competing against the Senior A National Teams from Spain, U.S.A., Italy and Egypt, Brazil’s Junior National Team and clubs from China and Russia. ‘’It went super well,’’ said Morin, captain of the Canada’s team free routine.. ‘’We showed a lot of energy and that really made us stand out. This program is a great combination of artistic and acrobatics and our acrobatic moves today were among the best of the competition.’’ The FINA World Trophy is considered the most spectacular competition in the synchronized swimming international calendar. The performances are judged solely on artistic merit and the athletes are allowed to use original costumes and accessories. Competition ends Sunday.
