Canadian national senior team member Élise Marcotte is the honorary president
Quebec City, February 24, 2012 – Nearly 400 synchronized swimmers will compete at the 2012 Eastern/Atlantic Divisional Championships scheduled for March 6-11 at the piscine Lucien-Flamand in Quebec City (7, rue Robert-Rumilly).The competition is hosted by the club Synchro-Élite and Synchro Québec and overseen by Synchro Canada. So far, there will be 367 athletes at the event competing in the 13-15, 16-18, junior and senior groups representing 24 clubs from Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, P.E.I., Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador. More than 65 coaches and 31 officials will also be involved in the event. Athletes from Western Canada will compete at the Western Divisional Championships March 29 to April 1 in Winnipeg. Élise Marcotte : honorary president Élise Marcotte is the competition’s honorary president. She is a member of Canada’s national senior training team for the 2012 Olympics and a former athlete at club Synchro-Élite in Quebec City. ‘’It’s a great honour to be the honorary president for the 2012 Eastern/Atlantic Divisional Championships. This competition is an opportunity to go back to my roots because it will be held at the Lucien-Flamand pool at the club Synchro-Élite where I started.’’ Performance of the Senior B National Team Saturday March 10 at approximately 6:30 pm, Synchro Canada's Senior National B will be in action at the Lucien-Flamand pool as they will perform their free combo routine. The Senior B National Team won the silver medal with this routine at the 2011 FINA World Trophy held in Shanghai, China. Qualifying event for 2012 national teams The competition will be the first step for swimmers in the junior and 13-15 age groups to qualify for their respective national teams in 2012. At the Divisionals, junior athletes look to qualify for the Canadian Open Championships set for May 1-6 in Victoria. Junior national team selections will be determined during and after the Canadian Open Championships. The Canadian national junior team will then compete at the FINA World Junior Championships set for September in a location still to be determined. As for the 13-15 age group, they look to qualify for the Canadian Espoir Championships set for May 23-27 in Etobicoke, Ont., The 13-15 national team selection will be determined during and after the Canadian Espoir Championships. The 13-15 team will represent Canada at the Comen Cup this summer. ‘’As was the case for me, some of the athletes at these Sectionals will launch their careers by qualifying for the Canadian Open or Espoir championships and then for the 13-15 or junior national teams. Then they will eventually earn spots on the national senior team and proudly represent their country at major international competitions,’’ said Élise Marcotte who competed at the Eastern/Atlantic Divisionals from 2000 to 2006.
