VICTORIA – Montréal Synchro and the Calgary Aquabelles are in a heated battle for gold in the team combo event after Wednesday’s preliminaries at the 2012 Canadian Open Championships in synchronized swimming being held this week at Saanich Commonwealth Place.

Montréal Synchro tabulated 82.350 points with the Calgary Aquabelles a close second at 82.316. Toronto’s Granite Synchro is third at 76.917.

In the junior solo preliminaries (16-18 age group), Emmanuelle Leclerc of the Club aquatique Edouard-Montpetit in Montreal stands first at 70.267, Merissa Redwood of Killarney Synchro is second at 69.667 and Bianca Martineau-Ferland of Montreal Synchro is third at 69.333

In the senior technical team event, Waterloo Regional Synchro was the winner with 67.167 points while Winnipeg Synchro was second at 63.167.

Competition continues Thursday with figures and duet preliminaries for juniors, the 16-18 age group duet prelims and the senior duet technical final.

For the juniors, berths are up for grabs for Synchro Canada’s 2012 Junior National Team scheduled to compete at the 2012 FINA World Junior Championships set for September 12-16 in Volos, Greece.

The competition has attracted 268 athletes from 30 clubs across Canada (Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Ontario, Quebec and Saskatchewan) as well as 36 officials.
