Montreal, May, 30, 2012 – The Canadian national senior synchronized swimming team for the 2012 Olympic Games officially unveiled today in Montreal the theme and music for its brand new routine in the free team event. The routine was greatly inspired from Cirque de Soleil shows and musical pieces. The Canadian will swim their free team routine - called ‘’The Circus’’ – at the Olympics on Friday August 10 at 3 p.m. ‘’This routine will show once again what makes Canadian synchronized swimming so distinctive and unique: the creativity in both our movements and acrobatic jumps (highlights) and the strength and endurance of our athletes,’’ said Julie Sauvé, Canadian senior national team coach. ‘’I would advise spectators in London to arrive early because the opening minutes of this program are very impressive. It includes new movements never seen before in synchronized swimming! We’ll also see another facet of the Canadian style because this routine will also be very artistic.’’ Among the musical pieces used in this four-minute routine are ‘’Terre aride’’ from ‘’O’’ compilation, ‘’Alegria’’ from the show of the same name, ‘’Incantation’’ from ‘’Quidam’’ and ‘’Pursuit’’ from ‘’Kà’’. The Canadian team also benefited from the expertise and advice from two Cirque du Soleil specialists while preparing this routine. In the final conceptual phase of the routine, Rick Tjia, a former dancer with La La Human Steps, choreographer and Dance Senior Talent Scout with Cirque du Soleil as well as with Dmitry Belyaykov, a former acrobatic gymnast who performed in the show ‘’Saltimbanco’’ and a sport talent scout with the Cirque du Soleil, provided advice to the athletes and coaches in order to polish certain elements of the routine. ‘’I believe this routine will pay tribute to the Cirque du Soleil which is a great source of pride for Canadians and will also help us gain support of the spectators with music and references they’ve already seen and heard,’’ said Sauvé. ‘’On behalf of Synchro Canada and the entire team I sincerely thank the Cirque du Soleil for sharing their expertise with us on our road to London. This support is another step towards attain that difficult goal of stepping on the Olympic podium in 2012.’’ ‘’We are very pleased to have inspired the Canadian team in its preparations and to have shared our expertise and advices,’’ said Bernard Petiot, Cirque du Soleil’s vice president, casting and performance. ‘’We wish the team the best of luck.’’ The eight countries in the team event are Australia, Canada, China, Egypt, Spain, Great Britain, Japan and Russia. They will each present two routines: a team technical (August 9) and team free (August 10). The cumulative score from both routines will determine the final standing. The theme and music for the 2012 Olympics technical team routine will be announced Monday June 4 in Toronto. Those for the duet technical (Zipper) and free routines (Jester) were announced on May 12 in Calgary.
