Canada stands fifth after duet and team prelims at Mediterranean Cup

TORREVIEJA, Spain – Canada stands in fifth place after the preliminaries in both duet and team competition at the Mediterranean Cup synchronized swimming competition.  The Canadians are represented by their 13-15 national team.

In duet, Caroline Marshall and Dylan Harding of Granite Synchro in Toronto   are fifth after the preliminaries with 78.7200 points.  Anisiya Neborako and Daria Topilina of Russia lead at 86.7800, Berta Ferreras and Emilia Luboslavova of Spain are second at 83.6000 and Noemi Carrozza and Laila Huric of Italy third at 83.000.

‘’We’ve only been practicing this routine for two to three weeks so we are pleased with our showing,’’ said Marshall. ‘’We were really focused from the warm-up on today and that really paid off.  Now we are looking to improve even more for the final.’’

After the team prelims, Russia is first at 86.610, Spain second at 82.980 and Italy third at 81.520.  The Canadians totalled 79.450.

‘’We had great energy at the start of the routine,’’ said Marshall.  ‘’We had some spectacular lifts that we did better than in practice.  We are pretty motivated now for the rest of the competition.  It was a good start.  For some on the team this is their first international competition.’’

Swimming for Canada in the team event were: Marshall, Amy Armstrong of Toronto, Wenjing Deng of Whitby, Ont., Mady Duboc of Toronto,  Ioana Gheta of Montreal, Halle Pratt of Calgary,  Madeline Walker-Byron of Ottawa and Brianna Wodehouse of Aurora, Ont.

Competition continues through to Sunday.
