Canada wraps-up Spanish Open on high
June 28, 2009 OTTAWA - Canada will be leaving Spain with confidence as they wrapped-up the
Spanish Open with another solid performance.
In the final event, the Team Free finals, Canada finished second with a score of
96.333. Spain finished first with 98.500, while France was third with 92.500.
The Spanish Open, held in Valladolid, Spain, was Canada’s final competition and last
opportunity to receive feedback prior to the start of the 13th FINA World
Championships on July 18th.
"We have reached a level where we are earning 9.6’s and 9.7’s for our
performances," said Canadian coach Julie Sauve. "At the World Championships our
goal is to earn as many 9.7’s as possible so we now need to work on achieving
perfection in practice and obviously in all our performances."
Canada’s performances this past weekend earned them much praise, but like their
coach the team knows it’s crunch time.
"As a team we know we need to raise our game to a new level," said Canadian team
captain Eve Lamoureux. "Our focus in our training camp prior to the World
Championships will be to have nothing but perfection."
Canada also finished second in Solo Tech, Solo Free, Duet Technical, Duet Free and
Team Technical. Canada finished first in Combo.
In addition to Canada and Spain the Spanish Open featured entries from France,
Mexico, Venezuela and a number of Spanish club teams.
