Canada excited to take stage at 13th FINA World Championships

July 17, 2009 -  After months of grueling training Canada is eager to compete in the 13th FINA World Championships which get underway Saturday, July 18th in Rome, Italy.

Canada will open the competition with the Team Tech preliminaries which will feature a routine depicting a male fashion show.

The competition wraps-up July 25th with the Team Free finals.

Canada will be looking to return to the podium at the FINA World Championships for the first time since 2001 when it won bronze in both Duet and Team.

“The athletes are definitely at their best and their performances are getting better day in and day out,” said head coach Denise Sauve. “We are hopeful for a medal in combo, solo tech and solo free, but we know the competition will be fierce as we will be up against Olympic medal winners.”

The team features a combination of veteran and young swimmers and is considered an extremely talented ensemble of swimmers who boast plenty of confidence.

“The team is focused more than ever,” said team captain Eve Lamoureux, of Montreal, QC. “We believe in our chances to win a medal and we prove it every day with the quality of our training. We are getting closer and closer to perfection.”

Ten-year veteran Marie-Pier Boudreau Gagnon (Riviere-du-Loup, QC) will be competing in her third FINA World Championships and will be swimming Solo Tech in a routine depicting an amazon warrior. She will also compete in Duet Free with partner Chloe Isaac (Brossard, QC) in a routine with a dragon theme as well as swimming in the Team Tech, Team Free and Combo.

Canada will be looking to build on its fourth-place finish in the Team event at the 2008 Olympic Games.
