Canadian Duet Within Medal Contention After Comen Cup Preliminaries
August 6, 2009 (BELGRADE, SERBIA): Canada’s National 13 – 15 duet of Sarah Brunin-Brouillette (Quebec) and Claudia Holzner (Alberta), with alternate Gabriella Brisson (Alberta) sit in fourth position after the preliminary duet event at the 2009 Comen Cup in Belgrade, Serbia today.
The young duo put in a strong performance of their “Desert Mirage”-themed duet routine and earned a score of 82.600 points. The Russian duet of Elena Prokofeva and Evgeniya Shtefan clinched the top spot with 86.600 points, followed by Evangeliam Koutidi and Evangelia Platanioti of Greece with 84.600. Rounding out the top three was American duo of Alyson Haylor and Alexa Tchekmarev with 83.200 points.
“I am really excited about how close we are to being on the podium in duet here,” says Head Coach Chantal Vallieres. “The finals will be a challenging event, but the athletes are very ready for it.”
The duet will compete in compulsory figures later this week. The combined score of prelims (50%) and figures (50%) will decide which duets qualify for the final duet event, but the final result will be 100% of the final routine score only.
“We really enjoyed swimming in front of the amazing Canadian cheering section today,” says Holzner. “Our performance was good, but we know we can improve and we will be even better in finals.”
